An ENT doctor is a specialist who deals with otolaryngology. This is a field that deals with the diagnosis, management, and treatment of disorders of the head and neck. These doctors also look at your throat, ears, nose, sinuses, and larynx. Read on to find out more about what an ENT Doctor does.

What is an Otolaryngologists

An otolaryngologist or ENT is a doctor who goes through specialty training after earning their first medical degree. These doctors are board-certified in otolaryngology. To maintain their licenses, an ENT, also known as an ear doctor , has to take extra medical classes and attend conferences regularly. ENTs usually deal with allergies, pediatric otolaryngology, and reconstructive facial surgeries. They also deal with rhinology, swallowing, vocal, and throat issues.

What Does an ENT Doctor Treat?

An ENT or ear doctor can deal with adenoid removal, ear infections, and congenital anomalies like cleft palate. They also treat patients with a deviated septum and eardrum perforations. In some instances, ENT doctors can treat patients with hearing loss by inserting ear tubes and installing hearing aids.

When to see an ENT

A general physician can diagnose the majority of minor problems. However, for more specific issues, they may refer you to an ENT or ear doctor who will do specific tests to identify disorders of the head or neck. If you are experiencing balance issues or dizziness, or breathing difficulties, you can skip a general physician and go straight to an ENT. You can also do the same if you have an ear infection or hearing issues. In some instances, you can visit the general practitioner first with nosebleeds or ear pain. Depending on what’s causing the issues they can refer you to an ENT Doctor.

Under normal circumstances, the glands in the throat and nose consistently secrete around one or two quarts of mucus daily, which then goes down the digestive tract. When there is an infection, the amount of mucus that’s produced increases and you may need to see an ENT Doctor.

It’s possible to go straight to an ENT Doctor or get a referral from a general practitioner. During your first visit, the ENT will ask what symptoms you are experiencing and they will also do an examination. If you are experiencing any of the issues mentioned above but are not sure whether you should visit an ENT, contact us and we will point you in the right direction.
